Urban Planet Lands at Palm Desert Mall
PALM DESERT, Calif. — Canadian apparel chain Urban Planet has inaugurated a nearly 22,000-square-foot storefront at The Shops at Palm Desert, marking its sixth location in California and signaling steady leasing momentum for the Coachella Valley’s sole enclosed shopping mall.
Occupying a prominent Level 2 footprint adjacent to JCPenney, the retailer introduces its value-oriented, fast-fashion apparel to an inland market balancing demographic shifts with evolving consumer spending habits. Urban Planet operates under Toronto-based YM Inc., a retail conglomerate with over 800 North American storefronts spanning banners such as Charlotte Russe, Mandee, and Rue21.
The opening carries regional economic implications, generating 35 permanent jobs alongside seasonal hires ahead of the peak winter retail corridor. For The Shops at Palm Desert, securing an international, mid-tier tenant underscores a broader leasing strategy aimed at backfilling legacy floor space with high-traffic concepts tailored to younger, price-sensitive demographics.
"We are focused on attracting established retailers that bring fresh energy to the mall, offer more choices for local shoppers, and contribute to our regional economy," said Nayyan Chandler, marketing and business development manager for the retail center.
The Palm Desert debut reflects YM Inc.’s measured push into the U.S. Sunbelt, with further California expansions slated for 2027. Amid sustained headwinds facing traditional department stores, mall operators across suburban and exurban corridors have increasingly turned to youth-oriented discount brands to anchor foot traffic. By blending everyday essentials, trend-driven streetwear, and competitive price points, Urban Planet’s arrival reflects how regional shopping centers are recalibrating tenant rosters to sustain brick-and-mortar resilience.
