Trump Declares “Golden Age” in 2026 State of the Union
President highlights economic gains, border enforcement, military actions and honors American heroes in wide-ranging address
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2026 — President Donald Trump delivered an expansive State of the Union address Tuesday evening, declaring that “our nation is back: Bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before” as he outlined what he described as a historic economic turnaround, aggressive border enforcement measures, and major foreign policy actions during the first year of his second term.
The address, delivered before a joint session of Congress, blended economic data, legislative appeals, sharp partisan criticism and multiple emotional tributes to military service members and private citizens.
Economy and Taxes
Framing the economy as the central achievement of his administration’s first year, Trump said inflation had fallen sharply, citing core inflation of 1.7% in the final quarter of 2025. He added that gasoline prices were “now below $2.30 a gallon in most states” and “in some places $1.99 a gallon.”
The president also pointed to financial market performance, noting that “the stock market has set 53 all-time record highs since the election” and that more than $18 trillion in investment commitments had been secured during his first 12 months in office.
Central to his domestic agenda were recently enacted tax changes. Trump credited what he called the “great Big Beautiful Bill” with eliminating federal taxes on tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits for seniors. He also highlighted a new child investment initiative known as “Trump Accounts,” described as tax-free investment accounts for children, supported in part by private contributions.
On trade, Trump defended his tariff strategy despite referencing “an unfortunate ruling from the United States Supreme Court.” He said alternative legal authorities would allow tariffs to remain in place and argued they could eventually “substantially replace the modern-day system of income tax.”
The president also announced a federal retirement matching proposal for workers without employer-sponsored plans and called for passage of the Stop Insider Trading Act, stating Congress should ensure lawmakers “cannot corruptly profit from using insider information.”
Border and Crime
Immigration enforcement featured prominently. Trump declared, “Today our border is secure” and claimed that in the past nine months “zero illegal aliens have been admitted to the United States.” He added that fentanyl trafficking had fallen “by a record 56% in one year” and that the murder rate saw its “single largest decline in recorded history.”
He called on Congress to end sanctuary city policies, increase penalties for officials who block deportations, and pass what he termed the “Safe America Act,” requiring voter ID and proof of citizenship for federal elections.
Trump also formally announced a “war on fraud,” to be led by Vice President JD Vance, arguing that federal spending abuses could be curtailed to help balance the budget.
Health Care and Energy
On health care, Trump pledged to expand price transparency and codify his “most-favored nation” drug pricing policy into law. He said Americans would “now pay the lowest price anywhere in the world for drugs” under the new framework.
Addressing concerns about electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers, Trump announced what he described as a “ratepayer protection pledge,” requiring large tech firms to build dedicated power infrastructure to avoid raising consumer utility costs.
Foreign Policy and Military
The president outlined a series of foreign policy achievements, claiming he had “ended eight wars” in his first 10 months and was working to end fighting between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized a June operation targeting Iran’s nuclear program, known as “Operation Midnight Hammer,” stating the U.S. military had “obliterated Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”
Trump said he would pursue diplomacy but vowed, “I will never allow the world’s No. 1 sponsor of terror … to have a nuclear weapon.”
On defense spending, he proposed a $1 trillion military budget and noted NATO allies had agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. He also referenced a “warrior dividend” payment of $1,776 to service members.
Honors and Recognition
The address included numerous recognitions. Trump announced he would award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Olympic hockey goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. He presented military decorations to service members, including the Legion of Merit and Purple Hearts, and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eric Slover and Navy Captain Royce Williams.
In closing, Trump invoked the approaching 250th anniversary of American independence, calling the current period “the golden age of America” and urging lawmakers to unite around what he described as an era of economic strength, national security and renewed patriotism.
The speech underscored the president’s intention to double down on tax cuts, border enforcement and assertive foreign policy as Congress heads into a pivotal legislative year.
