Hormuz Showdown

Washington—Tensions surged sharply after failed negotiations between the United States and Iran, as President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new maritime strategy targeting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil corridors.

Following nearly 20 hours of talks in Islamabad, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his delegation departed without an agreement. At the heart of the breakdown: Iran’s refusal to address concerns over its nuclear program—an issue the President made clear remains non-negotiable.

In response, President Trump ordered a counter-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, directing the U.S. Navy to restrict ship movement through the vital waterway. The move comes after Iran had already disrupted traffic in the region, at times allowing selective passage while asserting control over shipping routes—actions the President described as “global blackmail.”

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20% of the world’s crude oil supply, making any disruption a matter of global economic consequence. Analysts warn that even the perception of instability in the region can trigger spikes in energy prices and rattle international markets.

The President also signaled a more aggressive enforcement posture, instructing naval forces to intercept vessels suspected of paying fees to Iran for safe passage—effectively challenging Tehran’s attempts to exert financial control over the corridor.

At the same time, uncertainty now surrounds a fragile two-week ceasefire previously tied to the negotiations. With rhetoric escalating and military directives underway, the risk of direct confrontation appears to be rising.

Below is President Trump’s statement, presented in his own words:

“So, that's how it is: the meeting went well, most of the points were agreed, but the only point that really mattered – NUCLEAR – was not resolved. Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the best in the world, will begin the process of blocking all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. At some point, we will come to a settlement where ‘everyone can get in and everyone can get out,’ but Iran has prevented this by simply saying, ‘There could be a mine somewhere’ that no one knows anything about except them.

THIS IS WORLDWIDE BLACKMAIL, and the leaders of the United States – especially the United States of America – will never allow themselves to be blackmailed. I have also instructed our navy to track down and stop any ship in international waters that has paid a levy to Iran. No one who pays an illegal fee will have safe passage on the high seas. We will also start destroying the mines laid by Iran in the strait. Any Iranian who shoots at us or at peaceful ships will be CHASED TO HELL!

Iran knows better than anyone how to end this situation (...). His navy is destroyed, his air force is destroyed, his anti-aircraft defenses and radar systems are useless, Khomeini and most of his ‘leaders’ are dead – all because of his nuclear ambitions.

The blockade will begin shortly. Other countries will be involved. Iran will not profit from this illegal BLACKMAIL. They (the mullahs) want money and above all they want nuclear weapons. In addition, we are – at the right time – fully ‘operational’, and our military will take care of the small rest of Iran!

Iran has promised to open the Strait of Hormuz and has knowingly failed to do so. This has caused fear, pain and suffering worldwide. They claim to have placed mines in the water, even though their entire navy and most of their ‘minelayers’ have been completely destroyed. Maybe they did – but what ship owner would take that risk? It means permanent damage to Iran's reputation and what is left of its ‘leaders’ – but we are beyond that. As promised, you'd better start reopening this INTERNATIONAL WATERWAY RIGHT AWAY – and fast! In doing so, they violate every code of law.

I was fully briefed by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner about the meeting, which took place in Islamabad under the kind and very competent leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan. They are extraordinary men who thank me again and again for saving 30 to 50 million lives that would have been lost in a terrible war with India. I always like to hear that – the extent of humanity is unimaginable.

The meeting with Iran began early in the morning and lasted all night – almost 20 hours. I could go into great detail and talk about much of what has been achieved, but there is only one thing that matters: IRAN IS NOT READY TO GIVE UP ITS NUCLEAR AMBITIONS! In many ways, the agreed points are better than continuing our military operations to the end, but all these points are meaningless compared to letting nuclear capabilities fall into the hands of such unstable, difficult and unpredictable people.

My three representatives were – unsurprisingly – very friendly and respectful of the Iranian representatives Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghji and Ali Bagheri in the course of the talks, but that doesn't matter because they were completely adamant on the crucial issue. And as I have said from the beginning: IRAN WILL NEVER POSSESS A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”

As global markets and governments watch closely, the situation now pivots from diplomacy to enforcement—raising a single, pressing question: will pressure reopen the strait, or push the region closer to open conflict?
