Lindsey Graham Remembered for a Life of Public Service

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, the veteran South Carolina Republican who became one of the nation’s most influential voices on foreign policy and national security, died Saturday following a brief and sudden illness. He was 71.

His unexpected death brought tributes from political allies, longtime friends, international leaders and lawmakers from both parties, many of whom remembered Graham as a dedicated public servant whose personality, humor and willingness to engage with opponents made him a distinctive figure in Washington.

President Donald Trump, whose relationship with Graham developed from sharp political rivalry into a close alliance, described the senator as being “like a member of the family.”

“It’s very tough,” Trump said, recalling that Graham had spoken with him Saturday night after returning from a trip to Ukraine. The president said the senator sounded tired but otherwise appeared well.

Born in Central, South Carolina, Graham experienced personal loss at an early age. After both of his parents died, he helped care for and raise his younger sister, Darline. Friends said those experiences shaped his strong sense of family, loyalty and responsibility.

Graham served as a lawyer in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his political career. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 and entered the Senate in 2003, succeeding longtime Senator Strom Thurmond.

During more than three decades in Congress, Graham became closely associated with defense policy, judicial nominations and America’s relationships with allies overseas. His assertive approach to foreign affairs frequently generated political debate, but even critics acknowledged his detailed knowledge of international security issues and his commitment to the positions he believed were necessary to protect the country.

Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, a close colleague on defense and foreign policy matters, said there were “no words” to adequately express the loss.

Graham was also known for developing friendships across party lines. Although he could be a forceful partisan during major political battles, colleagues frequently recalled his humor, personal warmth and ability to maintain relationships with lawmakers whose views differed sharply from his own.

Tributes arrived from abroad as well. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored Graham’s support for Ukraine, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remembered him as a steadfast friend of Israel. Graham had returned shortly before his death from his 10th visit to Ukraine.

Graham never married and had no children, but often spoke affectionately about his sister and extended family. His office said the family appreciated the prayers being offered and requested privacy during an extraordinarily difficult time.

His death leaves a major vacancy in South Carolina’s congressional delegation. Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a temporary successor under state law, with voters ultimately determining who will complete the remainder of Graham’s term.

For supporters, Lindsey Graham will be remembered as a loyal friend and determined defender of America’s role in the world. For political opponents, he remained a formidable and sometimes controversial adversary. Across those differences, however, his sudden passing brought a shared recognition of a consequential life spent in public service.
